Teaching Kids The Desire To Earn
Many parents dread bringing their kids to the shopping centre. Does this sound familiar? Walking into a store, the kids immediately spot something they just have to have. There is no way you’re walking out of there without either your kid lying on the floor screaming their lungs out, or you simply giving in and buying what they want.
All parent’s will one day need to deal with teaching kids about money. More importantly how to teach their kids to be independent by earning their own money, instead of relying on parents to buy things for them.
Pay attention the next time your child wants something really badly - because this probably a perfect opportunity to teach them a very valuable lesson - how to save, earn, and work towards their own goals. You need to make sure they understand that a parent’s role is to provide a child with the things they need - not things they want.
You need to make sure you help them form the mental association between their incredibly strong desire to purchase what they want, and actually developing a savings or earnings plan to achieve their goals. I’ve found that the stronger their desires are, the more likely they are going to start thinking for themselves and coming up with creative ways for kids to make money.
If you’re not careful, its just too easy to give in to your kids - I know you’re a loving parent, you’re just trying to make them happy. Its your first child, and you just want to see that smile on their face when you buy them their favourite toy. Ok fair enough, but just be very careful from the beginning not to make this something that is expected. Kids are very perceptive, and its easy for them to realise that if they whine long and hard enough that they will get what they want.
In summary, please make sure you are conscious of the messages you are giving you child. Keep your eyes wide open for those moments when you child is filled with burning desire to buy something, make sure they know that the next course of action is to plan to save or earn the money themselves. If you do that your kids will be well on their way to being independent rather than being dependent on you.
