Some Social Networking Tips For Your Child’s Safety

It has now become easier to reach out to friends in the virtual world and share aspects of our lives with them through social networking sites, unfortunately this also made it easier for people with nasty intents to reach us. Children are the more susceptible to these sexual predators who prowls social networking sites searching for their victim. These dangers are happening right now and parents should be prepared to protect their children.

The best way to ensure their safety would be to talk to them about the dangers they might encounter in these social networking sites. Don’t forget to discuss the rules with your children so they’ll know why you’re monitoring their online activities. Depending on how old and skilled with the computer your children are, you have to decide how much you should tell them and what limitations you will impose, you also have to reevaluate these ground rules on a regular basis.

The following paragraphs will give you some safety measures you need to impose regardless of your children’s age.

Make sure they understand that under no circumstance can they tell strangers relevant information about their family or themselves. They need to know that seemingly unimportant information like names, addresses, and their schools are enough clues for these persons to find them.

Tell your kids that if they have to give their name online, then invent a new one that has no similarity at all to their name or which can give clues on their personality. It wouldn’t be any hardship to these malicious people to piece the clues together and discover where the kids are and where they live.

To limit the sites your children have access to, you should install a program intended to screen unsuitable sites. Closely keep track of the people your child talks to in the chat room, you never know who might be posing as a kid. Modify the settings in your child’s website so that only people of close acquaintance can gain entry and post comments.

Instruct your children to come to you if something has happened to make them feel awkward or disturbed, they should be able to feel that you are there when they need you. We have to let our child make decisions on their own, but it is also important that we be there to guide and help them when necessary. After all, social networking sites could prove to be as dangerous as we have made it.
