Proper lighting plan is very essential for your home. It plays a vital role in enhancing the beauty of the area. The lights should be such that they create a warm and a cozy environment and make the space more inviting.
Natural light is a very essential component apart from electric lights. So make sure that it flows into the room without interruption. For this, you can replace heavy curtains with window shutters or light drapes. Placing a mirror near or opposite the window reflects the light and thus makes it look larger and brighter
If we talk about the electric lighting fixtures, it is first important to understand the basic types that can be used in our homes.
The first category is that of general lighting. It is used for general illumination purpose in the home. These are ceiling mounted lighting fixtures which include florescent and halogen lights. Halogen lights can be dimmed and gives a more flattering glow in the room.
The second category includes task lighting fixtures. These are used for specific purposes like reading, cooking, applying makeup and so are used in various areas of the home. Lamps with adjustable arms are the most common lighting fixtures in this category. These should be glare free so that one does not have to strain his/ her eyes.
Accent lighting - is focused lighting that is used to illuminate a sculpture, piece of art, or architectural element in a room. Accent lighting is about three times as bright as ambient lighting.
The fourth category includes decorative lighting fixtures. These are basically to add an element of style in the room. You can use chandeliers and silk lanterns for this purpose.
The key to a good lighting plan is using multiple kind of lighting fixture. You can also use a single type for the whole space but it wont give you the complete effect. So, having knowledge about different lighting fixtures and the kind of illumination they provide can help you select the right fixtures for your home.
