Great Scuba Diving in Africa

by Matthew James

Africa offers a plethora of ultimate scuba diving adventures swaggering from tropical reef diving and shark diving to wreck diving. Dive with the Great White Shark, manta rays, dolphins and turtles and explore the rugged, wild and unscathed aspect of the magically mystique underwater world. There are many great places to dive in the world but one of the most overlooked places is Africa.

There is a wide variety of sea life in Africa. Since the continent is so big youll be able to dive in many different spots and see lots of different types of coral and sea creatures. You can see great white in South Africa, giant turtles in the Seychelles, or dolphins near Egypt. Here are some of the best places to go diving the next time you are in Africa:

The Aliwal Shoal is an excellent place to go diving while you are in Africa. The Aliwal Shoal is located off the coast of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Aliwal Shoal was named after the sinking of the vessel “Aliwal” in 1849. Aliwal Shoal has some stunning marine life which explains its popularity with divers. The Shoal is known for its abundance of Grey nurse sharks as it is a popular area where they mate. Th shoal is served by dive centers from the town of Umkomaas.

The Sardine Run as popularly known to the locals is idyllic to experience the awe-inspiring sight of dolphins, whales, seals, sharks and game fish. Between Mat and July, each year a large shoal of sardines move in to the coastal waters of Kwa Zulu-Natal and thats how this diving site has acquired its name. This moving fish restaurant and ensuing feeding frenzy is a sight to behold and certainly one of the wildest spectacles to occur anywhere in the world.

The Red Sea, with its clear turquoise blue water, has some excellent dive sites. The best of the reefs are absolutely stunning with a real diversity of life. You’ll find turquoise blue waters filled with a lot of fish and coral. You can dive to shark reef, a huge pinacle with a sandy plateau at about 9m on one side and a drop off to infinity on the other! There is a lot of good diving in this part of Africa.

For dive enthusiasts, Africa has a wide range of options. You’ll be able to dive wrecks, see sharks, see schools of fish, and much more. There are plenty of places to see. One of the best parts about diving in Africa is that not many people go there so there are many unspoiled places to visit that are cheap. If you are a dive lover, make sure Africa is on your list to see.
