Dell XPS M1530 Review - A Great Business Laptop

by John Reagan

The unit is current technology at its finest. It is at a thin 0.9 inches and thickest at 35.1mm. The carrying poundage is a light 5.72 lbs making it easy to carry and handle. This fifteen-inch machine has become as popular as its smaller predecessor, the Dell XPS M1330, which was considered as one of the best units ever created. Its makers, Dell has definitely improved the strengths of the smaller unit into a bigger capacity resulting in the XPS M1530. It tried improving on what is an already good set up in the latter mobile computer. The changes are improvements though the same drawbacks of the elder still remain.

The increased size with greater processing capacity makes this series cutting edge. The unit screen is at 15.4 inches, with bright and brilliant color hues and can be viewed in many angles. The integrated HDMI makes the unit produce great digital image output. The machine further provides an XGA display at 1280 by 800 display. It also provides a 2.0 mega pixel camera with the CCFL screen standard.

The improved laptop size and its new commanding build is the new asset of this XPS series. The bright and brilliant 15.4 widescreen display is beautiful with its direct frontal viewing and at other angles. Moreover, it has a built-in HDMI that makes a quality digital video output. The disparity between M1530 and M1330 is that the former offers an XGA (1280×800) display, while the latter had the option for a thinner and more power efficient LED backlit display.

The portable PC has ports and connections are found on both the left and right sides and not at the back. Up front are the jacks for the mike and headphones. The port for the memory card reader is also situated up front. To the left are the DC power jack, two USB ports, the VGA out, the Ethernet/LAN socket, the HDMI and the FireWire. To the right are the ExpressCard opening, the WiFi switch, the WiFi Catcher, the slot loading compact disc drive, another USB port, S-Video out and the Kensington Lock Slot.

Additionally, the XPS M1530 has a more powerful graphics card, the nVidia 8600M GT, for a better graphic display performance compared to that of an nVidia 8400 GS of XPS M1330. Also, the M1530 offers up to 2.80GHz Intel T7800 processor while M1330 had 2.2GHz Intel T7500 processor. Moreover, XPS 1530 uses GDDR3 RAM rather than GDDR2 which is commonly used.

As for audio output, the absence of a subwoofer makes its output average at best. The sound emanates from locations above the keyboard with the slot loading outputs noise is clearly audible. The battery attached to the unit is a nine-cell package that provides long working hours above the usual three-hour work output for a unit.

In totality, we can say that Dells XPS M1530 is good but not enough. With its downside on noisy hard drives and limited options for screen optimization, it could fall to second-best to its counterparts within the price of $1089.
