Buy And Upgrade Laptop Memory

Gone are the days when you had to buy two different computers in order to get all your work done. For instance, someone in engineering might keep a desktop in the home or office that would do all the heavy computing and rendering work and then they would transfer the finished drawings onto their laptop to share them at meetings. This is because desktops have more memory and are therefore more powerful than laptops. Today, with the increase in availability of laptop memory, the rules of the game are changing.

Computer memory is also known as RAM, or random access memory. It temporarily stores the information that your computer needs to function until you decide to store it permanently on your hard drive. The more RAM you have, the faster and more efficiently your computer can function. Today’s laptops generally come with between one GB and four GBs of memory.

If you are wondering how much memory is enough to make your laptop run smoothly, the first thing that you need to look at is your operating system. While there are always exceptions to the rule, on today’s operating systems, such as Windows XP and Windows Vista, one GB of memory is the absolute minimum you need and four GBs will give you the maximum performance possible.

However, most people, unless they are doing a lot of graphics heavy programs, will find two GBs adequate for their needs. Before purchasing your new laptop or a memory upgrade make sure to double check on your system requirements.

To install memory in your laptop, you will probably find a side panel that can easily be removed with a few screws. Older laptops, however, don’t have this feature and need to have memory installed by a professional.

If you are purchasing a new laptop and think that you might want to upgrade your memory in the future, you should purchase one memory stick and leave the other slot empty. That way if you have four GB in one slot you can later add two GB into the other slot.

If you let your laptop memory keep up with the increasing memory demands of operating systems and other programs, you should find that you can do nearly everything you want on your laptop.
