Their app store and its inherent organization and closed system are just too strong, and there are an absolute ton of great developers out there too.

#5: Apple had a seriously smart plan in advance

While some phone companies change their strategies on a yearly basis, and get heavily involved with mobile phone carriers who set the agenda for how phones are developed, Apple decided that it would be all about the unit itself, and its software. One unit, one OS, and no compromises — and they stuck to it.

#4: Developers, Developers, Developers!

There are loads of great developers out there doing work for the mac, and they know all about good design. Apple’s SDKs have always been extremely high-quality, and this fosters great quality in their developers, too. Naturally, this was their approach with the iPhone, and it has seriously paid off.

#3: The iPhone OS is to phones what OSX is to desktops

All they did was take the same path as with their desktops: control the hardware, and you can greatly increase the quality of the software. Since the iPhone OS doesn’t have to run on hundreds of different phones (unlike Symbian or Windows CE), the operating system is automatically optimized for that hardware, and all the software is, too. This pushes the quality of the apps beyond anything else available.

#2: The underdog role suited them extremely well

People still make a lot of crazy predictions about how this or that Apple product will fail, and the iPhone was seen as the biggest gamble (and potential disaster) of them all. When it came to the app store, things were even more grim — until it surpassed a billion downloads and everyone just kinda shut up and said “wow.”

#1: From Steve Jobs on down, high standards are crucial

Because Apple worked so hard on their operating system, phone hardware, and built-in applications, those standards are passed down to the developers. If there’s one ‘very simple reason’ why so many of those applications in the app store are so good, it’s this — rigorous standards at the top lead to high quality, all the way down the line.
